Recollections

I remember a day, not long ago,
When we passed a late summer’s day,
Dreaming together and happy,
Near the shore of a sylvan lake.
A picnic lunch, a blanket spread,
A canoe upon the water.

We passed that carefree time too fast
And laughed, and smiled and held our hands
Until the closing lateness of the day.

I will for ever hold that time
With the most contented dreams I've known.

Contented once, and lasting always,
For somewhere, ages and ages hence,
I will forget the way she left me,
And remember only her love.
