The Traveler

by Fern

He beats his own path out
Hard work of the untold kind
I can't imagine
He takes his coffee alone
Thanks
Company leaves it bittersweet
He cannot explain the consequence
Pleasures and despises
The familiar path
Torn between
Steadfast and
Unmentionables
He stops
Long enough to talk directions
But more unsettles
And moves him on.

Beautiful

by Fern

You were always beautiful to me
Even after all that
You were always intelligent to me
Even after all that.
There was a time
When you would be defiant
There was a time
When you would stand up

We were watching old Hepburn movies
Where Prince Charming comes to the rescue
I remember we were dazzled and laughed at the idea
But we secretly wanted it to be our hearts' desire
And when we had forgotten about it years later
You never left it out of you mind
And when he came along
This was your old Hepburn movie
Even the tears that came with it sounded good
You took that on as well
When he gave you jewels to prove his affection
You mistook it for the real thing
And gave him everything including your heart's desire
When he took a break from the relationship
You said that it was his character on fire
Even when he left you for dead

They came, riding on the back of a white horse
Bearing gifts far more important than they could ever imagine
And lovingly, foolishly you went with the Believing all that you had read
Gifts that you received whilst he didn't believe in them
Rare gifts you accepted as he flung them far and wide
And even when you found out, there was nothing left but to accept.
He went through you, thundering, demanding
Through your soul, your heart
And after that when there was no more left
He laughed and never looked back.

Can you see the light through the trees?
I know they are hidden now
But one day you would see them again
One day, you would realise the truth
You were always beautiful to me
You were always intelligent to me
There was a time
When you would be defiant
There was a time
When you would stand up
Don't change
