PLAINSBORO -- A Morrisville woman with a history of deception was charged with forgery and falsifying documents after she applied for a job as a nanny.
Police arrested Nancy L. Nusbaum, a 44-year-old woman who goes by multiple aliases, on Feb. 26 after a week-long undercover investigation into Nusbaum and her business practices.
Nusbaum first attracted police attention after a couple contacted the department and alleged Nusbaum presented false documents when they interviewed her. Nusbaum, who was going by the alias Alexis B. Stanton, answered the couple's on-line advertisement seeking childcare for their two-month-old baby.
The couple interviewed Nusbaum at their house, where she provided the couple with a resume, a letter of reference and the results of a criminal background check she had conducted on herself, police said.
Upon further scrutiny, the reference letter, supposedly from the state Office of Emergency Medical Services, was faked, and her resume and criminal background check were also found to contain fraudulent information and references, including Nusbaum's claim that she was a certified emergency medical technician.
Police discovered the suspect had an extensive and often bizarre 23-year history of fraud. In the past, Nusbaum has been accused of conning men into giving her thousands of dollars after embarking on phone or internet relationships with them, according to previous news reports.
Her alleged victims say Nusbaum has assumed a variety of identities throughout the years, pretending to be a South African model, the estranged wife of pop singer Peter Gabriel and the sister of comic Denis Leary. A web site called "Stop Aglaia," named after one of Nusbaum's aliases, has even been created by angry users who claim to be victims of Nusbaum's schemes, although she has denied any wrongdoing in the past.
Police finally located Nusbaum after contacting "Alexis S." on a childcare Web site and pretending to be a couple looking for a nanny. After arranging an in-home interview with her, police arrested Nusbaum upon arrival at the home, where she was found to be in possession of a fake EMT identification card and EMS badge.
She was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in lieu of $50,000 bail, and police said further charges are pending as they continue to investigate the case.
In addition to Alexis Stanton, Nusbaum is also known to go by the aliases Nancy Keegan and Nancy Keagan. Anyone who knows or has had contact with Nusbaum in the past is asked to contact Cpl. George Cier or Ptl. Joseph Bolognese at (609)799-2333.
