I've been a little scarce, too. Been busy working on some other projects. How's collegiate life?
If you want some song lyrics worth researching, you might try "MacArthur Park" by Jimmy Webb.
As for poetry, there's a lot of stuff out there :-) You can't go wrong with Eliot, since he's deep and quite respected by researchers. Others that would make my list for goo dessay materials are Whitman, Dickinson, Pound, Frost, and for something a bit more modern, Jane Hirshfield and Billy Collins.
I'm no expert on short stories, but everybody I've learned from says that you should visualize your scenes before writing them. Short stories need to be much more vivid in sensory detail than poetry. A good book on the subject is "Becoming a Writer" - see link below.
