(Taking It All) One Step at a Time

As I make my way over the water
And as I make my way down through the grass
I can see young families
Who all want to be last
You still believe we can’t lose
Digging through the garbage cans
For the last drops of booze

There’s concrete under the grass and yellow flowers
The clowns at every corner are preaching of peace and power
And we have successfully covered all evidence of a previous age
The painted girls have no business dealing with rage

As I make my way over the blue bridge
Where the railroad tracks are ground into the dirt
I can see the jealously in her eyes
I can see the pain and the hurt

And it’s no use asking what’s wrong
Or on her mind
She’ll say she prefers to be alone
But thanks for being so kind

She’s taking it all one step at a time
The downtown graffiti
Spelling out her name
She often finds life
In a variety of rhyme
She has problems with the rules of the game

And like a song or a drunken step
The poets and prophets are rising the dead
And she paints her room blue
She will never admit but I think it’s regret
And it could possibly be you

A week ago I spent a day in the café
Flirting with the compassionate stranger
So that the next time I come in
I’ll be ready for the danger

Shaking hands and introducing myself
Drinking coffee but eyeing the beer
Every time she disappears into the bathroom
Her naked body becomes clear

We all, at some point in time,
Wish we were somewhere else
In another time and place
Drinking Mexican beer with a slice of lime

She’s taking it all one step at a time
The downtown graffiti
Spelling out her name
She often finds life
In a variety of rhyme
She has problems with the rules of the game

We make our way down the crowded streets
It’s been a cold summer but they came anyway
Part of me hopes for rain so we can have it for ourselves
But I know the shops would stay open
And the buskers would still play

We pay an hour’s wages for designer coffee
They’ve been trained to sell bad pastries in a box
So we walk back the way we came
Never holding hands or sharing a moment
I suppose under different circumstances
We would call it a shame

But we walk past young lovers
With children on their first bicycles
And elderly couples sitting on a bench
Sharing a sandwich they bought early in the day
We are evidence of a new age
And I suppose this is our way

Back at home she disappears into her room
And I sit back at my desk
Writing lists of crimes
I’ll have to get around to doing
But for now we’ll both stare out the windows
The rain finally starting to come down
Nothing to do now but to drink the cold brown coffee
At the bottom of the cup

She’s taking it all one step at a time
The downtown graffiti
Spelling out her name
She often finds life
In a variety of rhyme
She has problems with the rules of the game
